National Seminar on Environmental Challenges of India
Environment and Social Development Association (ESDA) Delhi organized a National Seminar on Environmental Challenges of India on 27-28 December 2017 at The Constitutional Club of India, Rafi Marg, New Delhi in association with Vishwa Mitra Pariwar Delhi, Blue Planet Society, Allahabad and Shree Mansha Foundation Delhi. The seminar was organized very successfully under the leadership of the ESDA General Secretary Dr. Jitendra K Nagar who was the organizing Convener of the Seminar. The large numbers of academicians, scientists, policy makers, research scholars, environmentalists, educationists, journalists, social activists, civil societies, industrial representatives and students across the India were participated in the Conference.
On 27 December 2017, a workshop was organized by ESDA for college students and Social Activist with run of 3 short movies based on nature conservation for the participants.
On 28 December 2017, two scientific sessions with invited lectures, one expert session with ESDA award ceremony and a Maxico based environmental awareness movie were organized during the National Seminar. Hon’ble Ex-Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Shri Harish Rawat was delivered a very meaningful lecture on ‘environmental issues of Uttarakhand especially deforestation, Dams on rivers and loss of biodiversity’ during the evening session of seminar.

The Seminar Scientific Session 1st was chaired by Dr. H.P. Pandey from Blue Planet Society, Allahabad. Dr. Vinod Kumar Shanwal from Gautam Buddha University and Major Roop Singh Nagar the National Executive Officer of ESDA co-chaired the session. Dr. Umesh Kumar from Delhi University moderated the session. Dr. Ujjawal Sharma from PGIMER, Chandigarh highlighted the role of environmental factors in inducing Non-communicable diseases. This presentation was followed by Dr. Siddharth Sonkar from Vardhman Mahaveer Medical College who clearly showed the link between air pollution and child health in Delhi NCR. Dr. Suresh Deshwal from Govt. P.G. College, Ambala motivated the audience to plant trees if not for others at least for the benefit of their own children. Mr. Madan Panchal from Deshbandhu Newspaper highlighted that with the intervention of press, several polluting industries including reputed ones such as Bhushan Steel were closed down in Ghaziabad.
Scientific Session 2nd was chaired by Prof. Javed Ahmad the President of NESA. Mr. Sanjay Kumar from Zakir Hussain College and Dr. Ram Chandra Singh from Govt. P.G. Girls College Meerut co-chaired this session. Dr. Geetanjali Kaushik from MGM’s Jawaharlal Nehru Engineering College moderated this session. Dr. Kishor Kumar from P.G. College Badlapur beautifully quoted the verses from Vedas, Upnishads with regard to nature and environment. Dr. Vinod Kumar Shanwal from Gautam Buddha University highlighted the role of information, education and communication in dealing with environmental pollution. Mr. Sunil Satyam Asst Commissioner from Saharanpur enthralled the audience with his observance regarding village ponds. Prof. Javed Ahmad summed up the entire session with his key observations.
Expert Session and ESDA Award Ceremony 2017 started with the welcome of Dr. G. K. Arora from Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Prof. Mukesh Khare from IIT Delhi and Dr. Niraj Sharma from CSIR-CRRI. Dr. Jitendra K Nagar from ESDA presented the welcome address. Prof. Khare presented the entire picture of Air pollution in Delhi and NCR in terms of Air quality monitoring, modeling approaches and forecasting. Dr. Niraj Sharma from CRRI gave his address in Hindi and mesmerized the audience with anecdotes from newspapers on air pollution. He mentioned that poverty is the reason for environmental pollution. Dr. G.K. Arora presented the definition of sustainable development and added the term inclusive to it. Shri Bhoo Tyagi from Vishwa Mitra Pariwar highlighted the role of films and videos in environmental pollution. The highlight of event was the presence of Mr. Santiago Ruy, Culture Head from Embassy of Mexico who mentioned that his presence in Delhi reminded him of his country Mexico earlier was which very polluted. Vote of thanks was given by ESDA President Dr. R. K. Rana.
